Background Information:

The Master was born to Jaine Nettle and Vincent Saxon, making him a member of a larger satelite clan of the Nettle clan. His main duties as a member of this part of the clan involved protecting and serving the main Nettle clan to the best of his abilities. His first assignment was to become friends with The Doctor, the clan heir. Although he resented this at first, despite only being five, he came to enjoy The Doctor's company, allowing the two of them to become firm friends.

Going to Durmstrang with The Doctor, the two teens were absolute inseperable, both of them brilliant in their own ways. Whenever in direct competition with each other they would bow out and take a draw, knowing that neither of them cared about beating the other. When they were both fifteen, the clan took them for their initiation, the ritual to become full members of the clan. The initiation, which consisted of using a special time turner to see the flow of time itself, was something that was meant to inspire or terrify.

While it inspired The Doctor, it drove The Master mad.

It was subtle at first. He would mention drums, constantly hearing drums. They were always in his mind from that day onwards but he tried with all of his might not to fall to them, to cling to the life he had before the drums. Before he could seek the help that he needed though, the Nettle clan went to war with it's long time rival clan, the clan Darlek. In this open war between the two clans both The Doctor and The Master were called on to fight.

Taking up arms against his foes, The Master began to gradual lose his grip on what remained of his sanity. With every act he was ordered to commit, every kill and every defilement, he slipped deeper into the dark corners of his mind, where the drums banged on. The Doctor saw the change in his friend and tried to stop him. There was a spirited exchange and the two fought, but both held back. Fighting to a draw, The Master agreed to let The Doctor help him and he maintained some form of sanity for awhile longer.

When the clan elders asked The Doctor and The Master, both only 17, to use the TARDIS to erase the entire Darlek bloodline, and all those that sprung from it, The Master accepted the ruling. It was his duty to do so. The Doctor did not accept it. He argued that killing, literally, millions of people by eliminating the bloodline was too far, it was madness. Knowing that The Doctor was a more skilled fighter than all of them combined, the clan elders commanded The Master to kill his best friend.

And so The Doctor and The Master fought seriously for the first time in their lives.

It was a very close battle but in the end The Doctor defeated The Master, distracting him by simulating the sound of drums. Knowing that his best friend had used such an underhanded trick stung The Master deeply, as he had only trusted The Doctor with that knowledge, no one else. When The Doctor took the TARDIS and altered time so that he had made runes around the two clans, The Master seethed and fell into his madness. While The Doctor thought he had killed his clan and the Darlek clan by draining the oxygen from the dome he was wrong. The Master, using all the knowledge he possessed of his friend's runes, countered the action before leading the Nettle clan against the Darlek clan in the seemingly endless war.
