Give Blood - Give Life!

The banner had been hung over the doorway to the Hospital Wing, and Frank sat in the middle of the room. Around him were a couple of third and fourth years, who had 'given' a bit too much blood, and had to lie down for a while.

The banner wasn't lying. The blood wasn't going to the needy, but to his creation in his office, Junior, but no one needed to know that, really. So, technically, they were giving life. All Frank needed was a compatible liver, enough blood, and a powerful electroshock to start Junior's heart. He was so close to completion.

"Off with you," Frank muttered softly to Franky, who was walking, a bit unstable, around the Hospital Wing. At Frank's order, the cat wandered off to sit in a corner. Frank chuckled to himself. If people thought that Mrs. Norris had been creepy, they would love the cat if they came back to the castle and saw Franky.

Hearing footsteps approaching, Frank looked up and gave his friendliest grin, which only made him look all the more psychotic. "Welcome! Want to give some blood?"

Lolita had decided that maybe she would like to see her acquaintance Framk once more without the distractions and she bit her lip as she heaved lots of heavy medical tomes up the stairs, not because Frank might need them, but she had a few questions she needed answered and she wondered if he might help.

Seeing the sign Lolita looked at her arm and grimaced.

Maybe.

Walking into the hospital wing Lolita smiled over the top of her stack of books and she placed them neatly on one of the unoccupied beds, sighing a little she smiled slightly wider at Frank, the grin although slightly creepy was not that off-putting.

"Frank! Hello again."

Gesturing to the sign Lolita grinned:

"What's the cause?"

"Ah, Lolita, hello," Frank greeted happily. She was one of the few who didn't find Frank too creepy/scary to talk to. It was very refreshing, he had to admit. "What brings you to my dark corner of Hogwarts?" he asked, feeling strangely happy to see her. Not many treated Frank as a human being, after all.

"What's the cause?" Lolita asked, gesturing for the banner. Frank looked over at the woozy students in the beds, then rose from his chair and looped his arm around Lolita's, leading her toward his office with a smile on his face.

"I'll show you," he said as they reached his office, and he opened the door. As usual, the office was a mess, books, vials, quills, parchment, and ink wells littering the place, but there, in the center of the room, in what looked like a mix between a wheelchair and an operating table, sat a person.

Well, it couldn't really be considered a person. Most people would call it an abomination. Like Franky, this person was made up from many different people, of all types of skin color. Frank gestured for the so-called abomination. "Meet Junior, my to-be greatest experiment ever. I only need a compatible liver and enough blood to fill him up. Then, I'll jolt him awake."

Lolita smiled happily, she was glad that Frank seemed happy to see her, after all she hoped that they could get to be friends, it would be nice. Some professors were a little wary of her simply because she did hang out with Frank, but that was their problem.

"Ah two reasons really, I wanted to ask some questions about some passages in these medical journals I found in the library."

She gestured over to the large pile of books and then she turned back to smile, shyly, at Frank.

"And i just wanted to see you again, have a talk without distractions."

As he linked her arm Lolita smiled happily and she moved with him into his office, Lolita wondered what they were going to see but as he gestures to the creation on the modified operating table Lolita gasped a little. This must be Junior.

Moving closer Lolita looked carefully at him without touching.

"It's genius, you really can see how difficult this must be to create, I guess, if this is the cause I'll give some blood if you'd like." Lolita smiled happily

Frank's eyes widened considerably at that. Drain the blood of the one faculty member, save maybe the Romains, who spoke to him as if he was a normal human? "No, oh no, no, no, dear, your blood is much too important to spill," he said, shaking his head as he led her out of the office again and closed the door behind him.

"Now," Frank said once they were outside. "You said something about medical journals you wanted to talk to me about?"

Lolita blinked a little, she thought that Frank would have jumped at the chance to get his creation started but he didn't want her blood? It was too important? Flushing a little bit Lolita let Frank steer her out of his office and she smiled shyly again.

"Why's that? Do I have a special blood type or something?"

With that Lolita grinned broadly and she hurried over to the books that she has brought to show Frank, she waves him over, taking out her wand so that she doesn't damage the pages Lolita flicks through them and removes the letter she used as a bookmark.

Sticking it in her back pocket Lolita gestures at this one passage.

"It's just this passage in this one. I don't quite understand the concept between these receptors in the brain, how exactly do they control the extent of hormones within the body."

Lolita bit her lip in concentration and leant on the bed, her arms pressed to the covers and she looked up at Frank.

"Why's that? Do I have a special blood type or something?"

"Oh, not at all," Frank said as he watched the girl take out a book. "It's just that I don't want to take the blood of someone who treats me as a human being. I don't want to hurt you, and believe me when I say that the extraction process would hurt."

Frank lit a cigarette as Lolita presented him with the book containing her problem. "It's just this passage in this one. I don't quite understand the concept between these receptors in the brain, how exactly do they control the extent of hormones within the body."

"Well, dear," Frank said, going into lecture mode. "Hormones are chemical messengers secreted into blood or extracellular fluid by one cell that affect the functioning of other cells. Most hormones circulate in blood, coming into contact with essentially all cells. However, a given hormone usually affects only a limited number of cells, which are called target cells. A target cell responds to a hormone because it bears receptors for the hormone. In other words, a particular cell is a target cell for a hormone if it contains functional receptors for that hormone, and cells which do not have such a receptor cannot be influenced directly by that hormone."

Frank shrugged. "There's not really any regulation on the brain's part. Some cells just cannot receive hormones."

Lolita looked up from the book with a smile playing on her lips, so, that was good wasn't it? Frank no longer had the desire to cut her open and play around with her insides which was a relief for her. Lolita had enough things to worry about right now.

"Well...thank you, that's very nice of you to say. But, of course I treat you like a human, you are a person like everyone else...people are just too narrow-minded to see that."

With that Lolita looked at Frank intently as he explained and she nodded her head, that made sense, so it wasn't the brain like she had thought, the specialism of cells made much more sense to her and she nodded happily as the information finally clicked into place.

Gently closing the book over Lolita laid the letter on top with a small smile.

"That makes so much more sense now! I knew you'd be able to help me, thank you so much."

Lolita looked around for a moment: "How's Franky doing?"

"Well...thank you, that's very nice of you to say. But, of course I treat you like a human, you are a person like everyone else...people are just too narrow-minded to see that."

Philistines, Frank thought with a smile on his face. People who refused to see a great scientist for what he was, and refused to realize that his research could revolutionize medicine! Fools, all of them. Except for this one. This girl was interested in learning.

"That makes so much more sense now! I knew you'd be able to help me, thank you so much." Lolita said and looked around for a moment, before asking, "How's Franky doing?" That was another reason why Frank liked her. She didn't recoil at the sight of the life-impaired cat, but instead marveled at the fact that Frank had brought him back to life.

"He's over there in the corner," Frank said, gesturing for the cat, who was moving quite well now, walking toward Lolita. "I have managed to counter-act the rigor mortis, and he should be moving like a normal cat soon. I have implemented that into Junior, too."

Lolita smiled right back at Frank, it seemed as if she was saying something right and she was glad thar she was, he was interesting and intelligent just what Lolita liked in a friend.

As she heard Frank saying that Franky was in a corner not far from her Lolita went to look for him but when she looked down he was coming towards her, kneeling down Lolita let her hand hover just above the cat.

"May I pick him up? It won't hurt him will it?"

Waiting for the go ahead from Frank Lolita merely knelt down and scratched the cat behind the ears a little, not wanting to hurt him but wanting to treat him like a normal cat too. Then an idea struck her and she looked up at Frank.

"Is Junior going to, you know, live like a normal human? Can he go out an about or will he have to stay inside?"

"May I pick him up? It won't hurt him will it?"

"Of course you may," Frank said, puffing his chest out in pride. "I built him sturdy, after all. The stitches will hold, and the tissue has started merging, so there should be no problem picking him up," he said. After all, what good is a cat if it doesn't act and can be treated as a cat?

"Is Junior going to, you know, live like a normal human? Can he go out an about or will he have to stay inside?"

Frank froze for a second. He actually hadn't thought about that. He was creating life, but how would the public react? How would Junior react to their reactions? Poor boy probably wouldn't be able to handle any threats...

"Well," Frank started slowly, "I suppose it's all up to him. His brain has the basic instincts and such as a nineteen year old human, but it's a clean slate, as though he has amnesia, to be shaped however one wants."

Lolita saw just how proud Frank was and smiled even wider, she was glad that she could be the person that he could tell about all these things, as many people she presumed were probably not the least interested in his achivements.

"Okay then, let's say hello properly then hmmm?"

Gingerly Lolita picked Franky up and smiled at him, hugging him gently to her chest as one arm supported his body, stroking his head Lolita grinned widely as the cat began to purr, something that she hadn't thought it would be able to do.

"Oh hello there Franky..." she muttered "He really is wonderful, I want one now."

Lolita caught the look on Franks face but nodded softly, it was good that Junior would get to choose, she didn't like the idea of him being cooped up in one place all his life.

"Well that sounds good, giving him the choice I mean, are you going to be his Dad? Or his Creator?"

Frank smiled as he watched Lolita picking up Franky. "Oh hello there Franky..." she muttered as Franky purred at her ministrations. "He really is wonderful, I want one now."

Frank laughed at that, but then an idea hit him. "Well... if you like him so much, why don't you keep him?" he asked, raising an eyebrow. "I am too busy with Junior and my various patients to care for him properly. He deserves a better owner than me."

"Well that sounds good, giving him the choice I mean, are you going to be his Dad? Or his Creator?"

Frank put a hand on his chin and thought about it. What would he be to Junior? "I think... I think I'll be both. I'll be his dad, and his creator. One cannot do a project like this without growing attached to it, and I don't think I would be satisfied with simply calling myself his creator. I made him, I will give him life, and I will raise him, like a father."

Lolita gaped a little bit as Frank said that she could keep Franky, she laughed happily and kissed the top of Franky's head, this was a lovely present, after all how many cats were as diverse as this? And so lovely! And she had a vet right here...

"You mean it? I can keep him? Oh thank you Frank!"

With that Lolita gave Frank a one armed hug and kissed his cheek before going back to stroking Franky, a happy little smile on her face. But the way that Frank spoke about Junior made Lolita bite her lip, she wanted to help him...

"Maybe, maybe I can give you something in return for my lovely present?"

Lolita looked at the letter, attatched to it another picture and she bit her lip harder, setting Franky down on the bed.

"What type of liver do you need...?"

To say Frank was surprised when Lolita kissed his cheek was like saying the Giant Squid was small. He was downright shocked! He didn't know she would enjoy the present that much. After all, who, besides Frank and Lolita, would ever want a reanimated cat?

"Now remember, he can ingest and process food. His digestive system works just fine, but he doesn't need the food," Frank advised, smiling faintly. "I haven't tried giving him catnip yet, though, so I'm not one hundred percent sure what would happen if he got his claws on it."

"Maybe, maybe I can give you something in return for my lovely present?" Lolita said as she set Franky down on the bed. "What type of liver do you need...?"

Immediately, Frank went into research mode, and held his hands out to show the size of the liver he needed. "I need a male donor between the ages of eighteen and twenty-five, with the blood type AB positive. It's a very rare blood type, so that's why I haven't been able to get a hold of one yet."

Lolita nodded happily as Frank told her that Franky could eat and she made sure to note that she wasn't going to over feed him and possibly break him. Even though she was sure that Frank had made him so well that it wouldn't.

"Okay then, well feed you tuna won't we? And you can help me in the library, it gets far too lonely in there sometimes."

Her smile faultered a little and she nodded her head at the catnip, it was very lonely in there sometimes.

Lolita snapped out of it when Frank told her what type of liver he needed and she nodded, she took the picture off the letter and handed it to him, it depicted a long blonde haired, muscled and thoroughly stupid man.

"He about right?"

Then something occurred to her: "Do you have a piece of parchment I can borrow?"

"Okay then, well feed you tuna won't we? And you can help me in the library, it gets far too lonely in there sometimes." Frank noticed Lolita's smile faltering and knew that she, like him, was a very lonely individual. Loneliness was so painful sometimes. So painful that you'd even build yourself your very own son.

Frank blinked as she held out the picture, and he took it, looking the man over. Immediately, his brain started working, and he had to reach up and turn his knob to focus properly, imagining the man's actual size, along with the size of his liver. It could work... "He about right?"

"My dear, I think we may have a perfect match," Frank said happily, turning the knob twice more as Lolita asked for parchment. "In my office," Frank said, waving his wand. The door opened, and a roll of parchment came soaring out to him. He caught it and held it out to Lolita. "Here."

Lolita felt a small glimmer of guilt run through her body, could she bring herself to do this? She hated this man for things that she could never talk about, or tell anyone about, but did he really deserve to have his liver removed?

"A perfect match...?"

Biting her lip, Lolita waited, and smiled slightly as Frank seemed to get very excited at this prospect, as you would be, after all it seemed as though both of them were equally lonely but Frank had lasted much longer than her.

"Thank you so very much."

Lolita smiled and wrote:

'Pierre,

It would please me very greatly to finally meet you in person, it seems at last you have worn away my resolve and the Walls of my heart, so, I would like to see if my feelings continue in person, please come as soon as you can.

Lolita'

Grimacing Lolita shuddered: "My god that pained me to write."

Frank watched as Lolita wrote the letter, almost giddy with happiness. Finally, after all this time, he had finally found a suitable donor. Or so he believed. He wouldn't know until the man actually showed up, and he could sample his blood, but he had a really good feeling about it.

"My god that pained me to write."

"So, when can we expect him? Tomorrow?" Frank asked giddily, almost skipping where he stood. Now he wouldn't be able to sleep. Not that he ever did sleep. Well, sometimes he did, simply for the sake of sleeping, but his body didn't need it.

Lolita smiled sadly, totally unsure and feeling guilty already, and she placed the owl in the pocket of her jumper and she patted it softly, she would go up to the owlry and send it immediately so that he might get here tomorrow.

"Yes...tomorrow."

With that Lolita walked to the bed and she scooped up her books, clicking her fingers so that Franky would follow her and as he did so Lolita smiled at him.

"Well, I guess I'll see you tomorrow then Frank."

Waving slightly at him with the books carried in her arms Lolita turned to walk out of the hospital wing and back to the library.
